Loyal to NZCU Employees
NZCU Employees’ Robert (Bob) Irwin may have retired five years ago, but he still makes time to help out at the credit union each week. The 70-year-old grandfather has been a part of the organisation since 1980, five years after he joined Fletchers.
After working at Fletchers for 37 years, Bob was made redundant.
His retirement was to be short-lived. When fellow board member Marilyn stepped into the role of Credit Union manager, she arranged for Bob to help out temporarily.
When Marilyn left and Kona Hatalafale took over as General Manager, Kona asked Bob to keep helping out.
“It was mainly to get Kona settled in,” Bob says.
“I’d been on the board, so I knew quite a bit about compliance and our policies.”
Despite enjoying retirement, Bob didn’t mind taking a couple of days out of his week to help out at NZCU Employees.
“Helps my wife,” he laughs, “as it gets me out of the house for a couple of days a week.”
“I enjoy the conversations with our members and it’s nice to associate with the staff. I’ve always been fond of the credit union.”
He wants to see the credit union grow, which motivates him to continue helping out.
NZCU Employees has traditionally focused on families.
In recent times he’s seen the credit union family expand, bringing more diversity to the membership base, including students, younger members as well as workers and retired people.
His own family has grown, too. Along with his son, he started a Kids Club Account for his granddaughter Sharna to help teach her about saving.
Ever the loyal member, Bob says NZCU Employees continually looks after its members.
“It’s more personal than a bank,” he says.
Loyalty is why he continues to come in and help out, despite being ‘retired’.
“It’s loyalty with the credit union; I enjoy helping them out.
“There’s no other reason for it.”
Bob says NZCU Employees has always been there for him. Now he’s returning the favour by being there for NZCU Employees.
