Sharna’s Savings Habit

SharnaWhen Sharna Irwin was 11 years old, her parents and grandfather began teaching her how to save and opened a Kids Club Account for her with NZCU Employees. Now age 18, Sharna knows the importance of making good financial choices

Having just finished her schooling at James Cook High in Manurewa, Sharna is grateful to her family for their foresight.

“As an only child growing up, I was a little spoilt,” Sharna admits.

“That changed when my little brother was born, but what didn’t change was my family continuing to teach me the importance of saving,” she says.

“I’m looking for a part-time job right now, but when I’m given money I try to save it, and only spend it when I need to.”

It’s why the Kids Club Account was so useful for Sharna. With no fees and free direct credits and transfers, her family was able to save money for her – which she was able to access when she turned 18.

Even better for Sharna was the fact she earned interest for every dollar saved in her account.

Now saving up to buy herself a new car, Sharna’s advice is simple.

“If you see something that could possibly tempt you to spending money, but you know you’re saving up for something, just walk past it,” she says.

She adds that saving now helps you later, if you want to save up for something or just for emergencies.

Sharna knows how easy it is to get into the habit of spending, and admits that as an 18 year old most of her money goes on petrol.

But she says developing good savings habits from a young age makes it easier to keep it going as an adult, and she has the perfect role model in her father.

“Dad’s good with his money. He pays his bills and saves what money he has left over.”

It’s just a matter of self-control, resolve and, for her, being part of NZCU Employees Kids Club, growing up.
