Strong loyalty and service

Strong loyalty and service

If NZCU Employees was a KiwiSaver provider when Fred Wheki joined the savings scheme 12 years ago, he would have transferred his fund to join the NZCU Employees scheme with Generate back then.

The Hamilton-born and Waikato-raised Maori of Ngāti Hauā, part of wider iwi Tainui, has been banking with the credit union for most of his working life.

“I’ve been an NZCU member for a number of years.  When I was with the Ford Alloy Wheel Plant, they were the bank with Ford, so I joined then,” he recalls.

“When I transferred to Fletcher Steel, they were also here, so I’ve just stayed with the credit union.”

The father of four and grandfather of six, who recently lost a son, says it’s loyalty and great service that keeps him happy with NZCU.

“I’ve been approached by other banks to join them with the promise of lower interest rates,” says Fred.

“But for me, it’s about loyalty.”

The loss of his son took its toll on the proud father, and when he needed the financial support during this time, it was the credit union that he turned to. He says their willingness to help him out and the kindness they showed him during such a hard time is something he’ll never forget.

“The credit union has been here for me and my family for a long time. They’ve helped me through some rough times and, basically, I believe loyalty is a great thing.”

That loyalty is matched by the great service that has been provided by NZCU.

“They’re like family. You can ask family for a lot of things and the credit union has absolutely been there for me,” he says, adding that the staff at NZCU are always helpful and informative.

When he learned he could transfer his KiwiSaver fund to join the NZCU Employees scheme with Generate, having been provided with helpful information to improve his investments, Fred says he was over the moon.

KiwiSaver is a voluntary, work-based savings initiative to help you with your long-term saving for retirement. It’s designed to be hassle-free, so it’s easy to maintain a regular savings pattern.

Retirement, says Fred, is still a while away for him, although he believes it doesn’t hurt to be prepared and to stay on top of how your investment is doing.

KiwiSaver participants choose to invest their savings in one of several approved savings schemes and can only belong to one scheme at a time. People can change schemes at any time and each scheme offers several managed funds to invest the participants’ savings in, with varying degrees of expected risk and return.

“The information that the amazing NZCU staff supplied to me about their KiwiSaver scheme was awesome, as it gave me more options as far as saving was concerned.”

Fred’s KiwiSaver returns are looking good, he says, and he’s on track for some goals he’s set for himself.

“I’ve got a couple of goals that we’re looking to achieve this year and I’m excited to see how my KiwiSaver improves,” he says.

“I have a target there, but we’ll see at the end of the year how it goes and what returns we’ve gained.”

Generate KiwiSaver’s Growth fund has been the no.1 performing KiwiSaver growth fund over the past year and the past five years to 31 March 2019.

The fund has returned 10.78% per annum for five years compared to the average growth fund returning 8.69%. These returns are measured after the fees have been paid so you can make a meaningful comparison between KiwiSaver funds. A small difference in returns over the long term can have a big difference to your retirement, potentially tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
